Students pursuing a Bible major must apply for admission to the Bible program during the semester in which they complete 60 credit hours, or as soon as possible thereafter. All students seeking admission into the Bible program must apply and be formally admitted to the program after satisfying the requirements listed below. Students who have not been formally accepted into the program may not be permitted to take 300/400 level Bible courses without approval by the program director.
Transfer students with the required number of hours should seek program admission as soon as possible upon enrollment at Ohio Valley University. (See requirements below.)
Requirements for Program Admission
Satisfy all requirements for admission to Ohio Valley University.
Complete 60 hours, including four general education Bible courses (BIB 106, BIB 107, BIB 205, and BIB 206) with a grade of at least C in each of the four courses (Students who entered before 2004 may substitute BIB 105 for BIB 107).
Complete Introduction to Ministry Seminar (BIB 225) with a grade of at least C.
Achieve an overall cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.00, computed on all approved work, and a GPA of at least 2.50 on Bible courses, with no grade below a C in Bible and Freshman English courses.
Complete CIT 140, COM 131, ENG 131, ENG 132, and ENG 133 (for students entering before 2005). [In lieu of CIT 140, the student may demonstrate comparable skills for admission to the Bible program.]
Submit an application form, written letter of application, and a transcript of all college work previously completed (through the end of the most recent semester). The application form is available on-line here in .pdf form or in hard copy in the Bible program director's office.
Provide recommendations from two full-time OVU faculty members with whom the student has had classes, and from a spiritual leader in the student's home congregation. These recommendation forms are available on-line here in .pdf form or in hard copy in the Bible program director's office. Recommendation forms are required, letters of recommendation are encouraged.
Receive a C or better in all Bible and Religion courses required for graduation (This requirement applies to students beginning with those entering in the fall of 2006).
General Bible Program Admission Information
Application for admission to the Bible program should be made during the semester in which the student will complete 60 credit hours (generally, the second semester of the sophomore year, while enrolled in the fourth general education Bible course). Formal program admission will be delayed until the student successfully completes the general education Bible core or equivalent as required.
A student whose overall cumulative GPA or cumulative Bible GPA drops below 2.00 after admission to the program will be placed on provisional status for the next semester, with review required at the end of the provisional semester. A student may be on provisional status for academic reasons for a maximum of two semesters. No student shall be on provisional status during the semester in which they will graduate. Students on provisional status are not eligible to take the ministry practicum.
After suspension and readmission to the college, a student is required to reapply for admission to the program.
Provisional Admission to the Program
Students who complete at least five of the seven requirements listed above may be granted provisional admission to the program for a maximum of one year. Full admission will be granted to provisional candidates upon completion of all requirements.
Upon application for admission to the program, transfer students with at least 60 credit hours and a declared Bible major will be granted provisional status until they have completed the equivalent of one semester of full-time work at OVU (at least 12 hours), at which time the student should request an official evaluation for full admission into the program. The student should at that time provide letters of recommendation from two full-time OVU faculty members and from a spiritual leader in the student's home congregation.
While some allowances may be made for differences in course offerings between institutions, transfer students will not be exempt from satisfying requirement #3 above. Transcripts will be evaluated and academic deficiencies for purposes of program admission will be determined individually.
