BIBLICAL MIND-SETS

Jerry C. Dyer

  1. ROAD MAP FOR THIS DOCUMENT
    1. The array of items in the chart reminds us that the church of our Lord is filled with people with diversity of ideas, mind-sets, judgments and yes…even doctrines.
    2. It is the purpose of this document to explore some of the things we can do to reduce the tension by information and exercises that will help us look beyond the diversity in view of understanding "where people are coming from" when they don’t see things as "I" see them.
    3. I do believe we will find that most of the tension, separation and outright division is not now, never was, and should never be necessary.
    4. A chart is included in this document for YOU to decide whether or not the items and statements are of a doctrinal or cultural nature.
      1. You can fill this out and make your own decision on what YOU KNOW to be doctrinal or cultural.
      2. There will be a document for you to observe FOUR (4) Mind-Sets found in most any congregation of God’s people anywhere in the world.
      3. I will supply a sample "cultural" item that brings tension in some congregation(s) in our fellowship and let you see how Paul instructed us to deal with this item from Romans 14: and I Corinthians 8: and 10:.
  1. I would like you to consider ACCEPTANCE even when there is diversity as we travel on the path and goal set by Jesus to accomplish ONENESS (John 17:20-21). Certainly some questions we must ask are:
    1. Do we have to remain separate, concerning fellowship, while we are seeking UNITY IN CHRIST?
    2. Do we have to refuse to have fellowship in our fellowship until we see and believe everything exactly the same?
    3. Have I ever held a "position" that I no longer hold?
    4. Have I ever believed anything different to what I believe now…on any subject?
    5. Is there any one of us who believes that they understand everything exactly right on every Bible subject/topic/text and they will never change?
    6. Does it have to be that "every new thought on any subject is equal to apostasy"?
    7. Did Jesus condemn Thomas for his doubting or (implied) commend him for his searching for truth and accepting that truth?
  1. This begins to start the list of questions that I believe must be asked and answered in our Christian homes, Bible Classes, private discussions, open forums, Christian schools (Colleges, Schools of Preaching, Institutes, Universities) etc.
  2. Will you please read/study these things and help me come to a better understanding of the reality that we can be unified even with our diversity.

DOCTRINAL, GENERATIONAL, AND CULTURAL CONFUSION

  1. All churches who claim to follow Jesus Christ do have some generational and cultural practices. By saying that; I am not condemning or condoning…its just a matter of fact.
  2. Sometimes our generational and cultural practices serve us well and sometimes they impede our progress.
  3. We are going to look at a chart that I have devised to be used to help each of us in understanding what WE believe to be Doctrinal, Cultural and/or Generational.
    1. Please take time to fill this out.
    2. You will find it very revealing and conversationally stimulating if you do this with others in a Bible class, retreat, family meeting of the church etc.
    1. For illustration; I want to share with you a far out example of an abusive cultural tradition. This is still practiced by some churches in Christendom in Europe (according to _________)in spite of this statement from God in Ezekiel 16:12 ("And I will put a jewel in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.") where God is telling Israel what He will do with and for her if she will repent. In some churches women with pierced ears are never allowed to take part in communion. This viewpoint is clearly cultural and not biblical. Should we accept this cultural viewpoint as the norm for the church at large in order to have fellowship with these people (assuming this is the only barrier to fellowship), ignore it, or try to change the minds of the people who hold and bind this view? As we contemplate an answer to the above options: Visualize with me for a moment as I try to "break" this news to a new child of God who has pierced ears. Won’t she rejoice to learn that she is a member of the body of Christ, she has been washed with the blood of Jesus, BUT she can NEVER participate in a communion service…ever!!! Can you imagine the "desire" that she will have to go to her dearly beloved friend and neighbor who is "equally pierced" and share with her that she too will be unacceptable for communion because of something that her parents did for her when she was a young child?
  1. Some of the greatest barriers to worship, service, and evangelism are not biblical but cultural.
    1. I have helped lead over 1,000 souls to Jesus in my personal ministry.
    2. I have found that many of the barriers that these precious new souls have had to overcome in order to be socially acceptable in the family of God had nothing to do with biblical issues but generational, cultural and traditional "positions" held on to as tightly and in some cases even more tightly than the "positions" found in the word of God.
      1. Joe was informed by one sister who had been a church member for more than 40 years, when he chosen to wear a suit and tie instead of his less casual attire, "I am so glad that you choose to dress like Jesus wants you to dress when you come to church".
      2. There have been occasions when new Christians (and in some cases visitors) have been informed that they were seated in a pew/chair of one who has set there for ______years. I could spend the rest of this document telling of incidents like this.
    1. Is it possible that some of our traditional, cultural "ideas" are and have actually been road blocks and stumbling blocks which have discouraged and frustrated new Christians?
    2. It is a reality that some of the following items (in the questionnaire below) have been sources, of discomfort, discouragement and perhaps even division in the body of Christ.

You look at the list. Please put a check mark beside each of these statements that you believe to be Biblical and do the same beside the ones you believe to be Cultural or Traditional or Parochial . For example: Should you believe that the Bible requires/commands that wives should not work outside the home; you would place a check on the line that corresponds with "Biblical" on question 9:

TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT (I Corinthians 8:1-13)….THAT’S THE QUESTION IN MATTERS OF JUDGMENT

  1. In matters of judgment there are at least four (4) Mind-Sets in most/all congregations of God’s people.
  2. Here are the acronyms with their words.
    1. The explanation is given after the listing of three passages where these are mentioned time after time.
    2. As in other matters before you; could you please help me come up with more descriptive terms for our fellowship.
    3. We are a unique "sub-cultural" in a larger "sub-cultural" called Christianity and an even larger culture called the World.
    4. You can extract from these passages, thoughts that will help develop this concept for discovering, understanding, explaining and accepting those we need to accept and helping those who are unacceptable in God’s Word…i.e. P.W.C

Three of these mind-sets are clearly identified in the New Testament (one is implied often…PWC). Please take time to read the following passages.

ROMANS 14:1-15:7 Receive one(AWC) who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. For one(PMC & NPMC) believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak(AWC) eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats(PMC) despise him who does not eat(NPMC or AWC), and let not him who does not eat(NPMC or AWC) judge him who eats(PMC); for God has received him. Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day(PMC), observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day(NPMC), to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats(PMC), eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat(NPMC or AWC), to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. But why do you(AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) judge your brother? Or why do you (AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) show contempt for your brother? For we (AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: "As I live, says the LORD, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God. So then each of us ( AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) shall give account of himself to God. Therefore let us (AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother's way. I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean(AWC or NPMC), to him it is unclean. Yet if your( AWC,PMC) brother(AWC) is grieved because of your food, you (PMC) are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your ( PMC) food the one(AWC) for whom Christ died. Therefore do not let your (PMC) good be spoken of as evil; for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men. Therefore let us (AWC,PWC,PMC,NPMC) pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with offense(AWC). It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your (PMC) brother (AWC) stumbles or is offended or is made weak. Do you (PMC) have faith? Have it to yourself (PMC) before God. Happy is he(PMC) who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But he who doubts(AWC) is condemned if he(AWC) eats, because he(AWC) does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin."

We then who are strong (NPMC, PMC) ought to bear with the scruples of the weak (AWC), and not to please ourselves (NPMC,PMC). Let each of us (AWC,PWC,NPMC,PMC) please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me." For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you (AWC, PWC, NPMC, PMC) to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you (AWC, PWC, NPMC, PMC) may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.

I CORINTHIANS 8:1-13: Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him. Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live. However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some(AWC), with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their(AWC) conscience, being weak, is defiled. But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse. But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours(PMC) become a stumbling block to those who are weak(AWC). For if anyone(AWC) sees you(PMC) who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak(AWC) be emboldened to eat those things offered to idols? And because of your(PMB) knowledge shall the weak brother(AWC) perish, for whom Christ died? But when you(PMC) thus sin against the brethren(AWC), and wound their(AWC) weak conscience, you(PMC) sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my(PMC) brother(AWC) stumble, I(PMC) will never again eat meat, lest I(PMC) make my(PMC) brother(AWC) stumble."

I CORTHIANS 10:23-11:1: Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-being. Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience' sake; for "the earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness." If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you(PMC), asking no question for conscience' sake But if anyone says to you(PMC), "This was offered to idols," do not eat it for the sake of the one(UNBELIEVER) who told you, and for conscience' sake; for "the earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness. "Conscience," I say, not your(PMC) own, but that of the other(UNBELIEVER). For why is my(PMC) liberty judged by another man's(UNBELIEVER or AWC) conscience? But if I(PMC) partake with thanks, why am I(PMC) evil spoken of for the food over which I(PMC) give thanks? Therefore, whether you(ANY CHRISTIAN) eat or drink, or whatever you(ANY CHRISTIAN) do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

IDENTIFIABLE MIND-SETS IN ANY CHURCH

PROFESSING WEAK CHRISTIAN:

  1. FIRST, there are those who, for years, have controlled business meetings, elderships and often the entire congregation by professing to be weak and susceptible to sin if you do "this", "make this change", "hire this preacher", "appoint this elder", "allow this person to teach the class", "say this from the pulpit".
  2. Often the (PWC) will say that this behavior (whatever is stated by them) will offend me.
    1. Either they are using the scriptures where "offend" is mentioned to mean that "it will hurt my feelings" if you do or say this; therefore you can't do it because the Bible doesn't allow it.
    2. For sure they do not know what the Bible is teaching or what the word "offend" means when they take that position.
    3. On the other hand; they do not know that the word means that a person will be weakened spiritually if you "do, say, change" etc.
    4. It actually means that by my knowledge and behavior to "eat meat" etc. that I can tempt a person to go against their "weak conscience" and sin against Christ by following my lead.
    5. And if I have contributed to that sin committed by the weak brother/sister, then I have sinned against Christ. (cf. I Corinthians 8:1ff).
    6. This is a very clear biblical teaching and we will discuss it when we talk about the actual weak Christian.
    7. However, this Christian under discussion is simply using this "professional" weakness to control and manipulate the business meeting, eldership or congregation from doing something simply because s/he doesn't want it to be done.
    8. I use the word "professional" meaning that s/he is professing to be weak and would be damaged spiritually by the action of the individual or congregation but in truth s/he wouldn't be.
    9. S/he is simply a manipulator.
  1. COMPOSITE:
    1. Problem: Their list of "Don’ts" are longer than God’s list.

Their list of "Do’s" are shorter than God’s list.

We do/can not draw lines to the LEFT or RIGHT of the line(s) that God has already drawn!

    1. They build their own carefully constructed pattern of living and then try to make it the norm for the entire church.
    1. Spiritual maturity for one who thinks this way is finally achieved when they have closed all the right doors and cut themselves off from all "evil" or "evil appearances."
    1. They ignore the "spirit of the law" and major on the "letter of the law". (eg. Man or Sabbath; Ox in the ditch; Healing the crippled man)
    1. They make other believers prisoners of their standard and expectations. If they are allowed; they can keep any church from doing anything they don’t want them to do…."it would offend me".
    1. They become the judge, jury and prosecuting attorney of the conscience for the rest of the community of believers.
    1. They are not weak in the biblical sense in that their sensitive conscience would be injured by the actions of their liberated brethren.
    1. They use their "mis-interpreted weakness" as a weapon to make the circumstances comply with their VIEWPOINT.
      1. From a biblical standpoint they are not weak if they are not susceptible.
      2. In spite of this; they use their alleged weakness to MANIPULATE others. (who will teach/preach, what will be taught, new building, new meeting times, any changes.)
    1. ONE HUGE PROBLEM:
      1. This form of hypocrisy contributes more toward the death of the beauty of the church than any single factor.
    1. WHAT DO YOU DO?
    • A person with this viewpoint needs to be:
      • Confronted.
      • Called upon to repent
      • Rebuked if they won't repent
      • With a desire to see them restored to the path of USEFULNESS AND BLESSING…Gal. 6:1-2; Titus 3:9-11

For lack of a better term (please help me come up with a more culturally understandable word in our fellowship) I call this person a PROFESSING WEAK CHRISTIAN (PWC) and will refer to this person as such from this point forward in this document.

AUTHENTIC WEAK CHRISTIANS

  1. The SECOND MIND-SET, found in any congregation, is a person who is genuinely weak and could be offended to go against their conscience in doing something that even they may know(Intellectually) it is all right but their conscience has not "caught up" with their knowledge.
    1. They probably do not believe that they have the freedom to "eat meat" etc. and they have concluded that it would be a sin for them to do or practice such behavior.
    2. Either they are not old enough chronologically or spiritually as a child of God to be able to discern His will on this matter of judgment such as "eating meat" found in I Corinthians 8:1ff.
    3. In passing: I'll just mention that the Bible teaches us that people should not remain in this mind-set.
      1. They should mature to the point where they can chose to do or not do those things that are matters of judgment. (Again, I emphasis that this discussion is in the area of matters of judgment and not doctrinal matters).
      2. I should also mention that we rejoice that the congregation always has these people as an intricate part of the fellowship because it says that there are new births always taking place in the family of God.

I call these brethren Authentic Weak Christians; hereafter referred to as AWC.

NON-PARTICIPATING MATURE CHRISTIAN:

THIRD MIND-SET: There are also Christians who are mature but choose not to participate in some activities for their own reasons. We will refer to these as NON-PARTICIPATING MATURE CHRISTIANS or hereafter known as NPMC.

    1. These brethren feel that they have the freedom to participate in certain things; however they choose not to for various reasons.
    2. It could be that they know of situations where a weak Christian was sorely tempted and gave into that temptation to go against their conscience when they saw a mature Christian doing the same thing.
    3. They don't want to take unnecessary chances.
    4. I can remember hearing a sermon once with the title "The Infallible Safe Course". The content of that sermon would describe the mind-set of the NPMC. They just don't want to ever be seen as a stumbling block for anyone.
    5. Someone said that one who is soaked with gasoline should not play with fire.
      1. This also is a part of the thinking of these brethren.
      1. Some have been involved in lives that, as least, convinced them that there were some situations that they did not want to ever be involved in again.
      1. I respect these people, their honesty, their reasonable approach to life and their deep desire not to put a road block or stumbling block in the path of anyone headed toward heaven.

6. IMPORTANT:

      1. Maturity for the non-participating Christian is not necessarily the exercise of liberty.
      1. They will not necessarily become more mature if they are able to exercise more freedom and rights. That does not make them more mature.
      1. Their greatest step is in the are of ATTITUDE.
    • They are balanced when they ACCEPT and WELCOME the PMC as a legitimate and God-pleasing spiritually mature Christian.
    • They will banish all thoughts which would consider the PMC "more spiritual" if they would only limit their rightful liberty.

PARTICIPATING MATURE CHRISTIANS:

The LAST ONE that is easily identifiable in these passages is the PARTICIPATING MATURE CHRISTIANS hereafter identified as PMC.

    1. These brethren also recognize the freedom of conscience to exercise freedoms that others must or choose not to exercise.
    2. However, these do not flaunt their questionable (questionable to the other three mind-sets) behavior around number two or three.
      1. They do not "rub the noses" of the PWC, or the NPMC.
      2. They do their best to avoid practicing such an activity around the AWC when they know that it could be offensive to their weak conscience.
    1. These brethren do not see themselves as some sort of an elite class of spiritual people who know they could never be overtaken in a fault as they exercise their freedoms in Christ.
      1. They have the attitude that Paul expressed in Romans 14:22 "Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves."
      2. I do believe that the tension is increased if the PMC chooses to try to become "evangelistic" in their search for others to embrace the same mind-set.
      3. It is my opinion that a PMC should feel secure in this mind-set enough to not have the need to have others of the same mind-set constantly validating their decision to be a PMC.
      4. Being a PMC; I realize that by choosing this mindset or approach to Christianity, sometimes I "walk close to the edge" and am much more vulnerable to a sudden puff of wind that will be a greater threat to blow me over the edge.

(1). I do not want another child of God to "walk that edge" unless they are fully convinced in their mind that they can and want to walk that edge.

(2). I do not want them to be "recruited" with the fervor of an evangelist.

      1. The PMC:
    • Acknowledges their legitimate liberties in Christ.
    • And then limits them when, where and with whom it is appropriate and the loving thing to do.

A potential cause for conflict in the body is the PMC who is not careful in the exercise of their liberty. (Lets look at that concept for a moment)

    1. COMPOSITE OF ONE WHO CREATES PROBLEMS IN THE BODY:
      1. Becomes a CRUSADER FOR RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS.
    • "Too many traditions"
    • "Change for change sake"
    • "It’s not my father’s church anymore"
    • Thought: Last two Presidential elections in USA.(Explain)
      1. Other Participating brethren, who are careful with their liberty, become citations for this person’s arguments for exercise for RIGHTS.
      2. Try to build a list of names to justify their abuse of liberty. (Gal. 5:13-15)
      3. They are weak in Bible ethics on how to deal with weak Christians.
      4. This type of individual can hinder or harm the growth and development of the weaker Christian as well as the entire church by flaunting their liberty.
    1. They need to be confronted and possibly rebuked with a view to their restoration to usefulness and blessing.

IMPORTANT: Liberty possessed does not have to be practiced.

Trusting that you have a better understanding of the four mind-sets; lets look see how this could play out in a congregation with a specific "situation". However, lets first look at any number of things that could cause tension in a congregation or between individuals who have different mind-sets.

FOR EXAMPLE:

* Procedures in worship (times, how often, variety in procedures etc.).

* Modest/Immodest attire.

* Women's role in the decision making of the congregation.

* Women's leading in prayer in front of men.

* Leadership styles.

* Sunday evening communion.

* Women wearing or not wearing veils in the assembly.

* Invitation at end of sermon (required or not etc.)

* Eating out where liquor is being served.

* Attending movies

* Attire to be worn at assembly.

* Is it essential to have a Sunday School?

* Clapping during worship.

* Raising hands during prayer.

* Special singing groups in the building.

* Multiple cups for communion services.

* Eating in the church building.

* Sending money directly to an orphans home.

Get the point? There’s a lot of things that have created tension. ( I know that I am letting my emotions go when I say...."Don't you know that Satan is happy for the many hours that have been spent discussing and debating these topics? Can you imagine the numbers of people who could have been taught, prayed with and for, visited, encouraged, restored instead of arguing over these items? "

Anyway, lets see if we can come up with something to help each mind-set learn about, be sensitive to, understand, appreciate and approve of the others.

Lets use going to the MOVIES as an issue to work with in our model. On the "we can't do it" side; this discussion usually centers around this: "We can't support an industry that promotes so much sex, violence, disrespect for family and God etc." Recently the movie put out by Disney The Hunchback of Notre Dame is drawing a lot of controversy because of several suggestion of an alternative lifestyle etc. Disney Enterprises is also being boycotted by some religious organizations because of their decision to be very sensitive to the gay community in several ways. People in and out of the Lord's church are having discussions surrounding this general category of movies and the industry. How do you apply the four mind-sets to this issue and work through all of this in the living organism called the body of Christ? Maybe this will help
