TULIP -- The Five Points of Calvinism

The Four Stages of Calvinism

  1. Calvin (1509-1564)
  2. Beza (after Calvin's death)
  3. Synod of Dort (1618-1619) -- added Limited Atonement
  4. Westminister Confession (1646)

The Five Points of Calvinism

  1. Total Depravity -- man cannot do anything good
  2. Unconditional Predestination -- God arbitrarily predestined
  3. Limited Atonement -- Christ died only for the elect
  4. Irresistible Grace -- The elect cannot resist God's Grace
  5. Perseverance of the Saints -- The elect cannot be lost
Arminianism -- modifies all but #1; totally depend on God's grace
